LYNWOOD — Northgate González Market opened the doors of its newest store in Lynwood Nov. 12.

As mariachi music filled the room, the family-owned grocery chain celebrated the occasion with a special reception for the community.

The new 36,974-square-foot supermarket, located at 11630 Long Beach Blvd., features murals on inside and exterior walls painted by local artist Levi Ponce. The Lynwood location stands on a site that underwent extensive environmental improvements, including soil clean-up and regulatory review, before being transformed into a vibrant full-service grocery store designed to meet the needs of local families.

“We are thrilled to finally open our doors to the Lynwood community,” said Oscar González, co-president of Northgate González Market. “This store is a reflection of our commitment to innovation, quality and community.

“We’re proud to bring fresh, affordable food and a true taste of Mexico to families who have long awaited a market like Northgate Market in their neighborhood.”

The store opening has created about 250 jobs, most of them residents of Lynwood or neighboring communities.

represents a significant investment in the local economy, with about 250 associates hired, most of them full-time Lynwood residents.

The market was built on a site that once housed a gas station. The state Department of Toxic Substances Control provided nearly $5 million to clean up the contamination

“Environmental cleanup lays the foundation for projects like this one — turning properties that once posed risks into safe, useful spaces that serve the community,” said Katherine Butler, director for the dpeartment.

“As a lifelong resident and former mayor of Lynwood, it’s truly inspiring to see Northgate Gonzalez Market open its doors here,” said Assemblyman José Luis Solache Jr., D-Paramount. “This store represents more than just access to fresh food — it’s a symbol of investment, resilience, and community pride. The Gonzalez family’s commitment to Lynwood ensures that future generations will have both quality food options and new opportunities to thrive.”

In celebration of the new store opening, Northgate Market is honoring Patty Rodriguez, children’s book author, with a $5,000 donation of her children’s books to local elementary schools and libraries. In addition, Northgate Market is donating $50,000 to the Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation, which will provide college scholarships and grants to schools and teachers in the Lynwood School District.
