LOS ANGELES — Television producer Chuck Lorre will receive Project Angel Food’s highest honor at the nonprofit’s annual Angel Awards Gala later this month.
Lorre will be presented with the Founders Angel Award at the Sept. 26 event in Los Angeles, with his daughter, director Nikki Lorre, presenting the honor, according to the organization. The award has been bestowed only once before in Project Angel Food’s 37-year history.
The previous recipients were Project Angel Food founder Marianne Williamson and co-founders Freddie Webber, David Kessler, Howard Rosenman and Ed Rada in 2015.
The Grammy-nominated Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies will perform at the gala. The band performed and recorded “The History of Everything,” the theme song for Lorre’s hit television series “The Big Bang Theory.”
Loni Love will serve as emcee, while actress and comedian Caroline Rhea will serve as auctioneer for the live fundraising portion of the event, officials said.
Lorre has created, executive produced or written more than 1,500 television episodes during a career spanning more than three decades. His credits include “The Big Bang Theory,” “Two and a Half Men,” “Young Sheldon,” “Mom,” “Mike & Molly,” “The Kominsky Method,” “Dharma & Greg,” “Cybill” and “Grace Under Fire.”
His current series include CBS’ “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” Netflix’s “Leanne” and HBO Max’s “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.”
Project Angel Food officials cited Lorre’s financial support of the organization, including funding that helped make possible the Chuck Lorre Family Foundation Kitchen & Campus. According to the nonprofit, the facility increased its annual capacity from 1.5 million to more than 4.5 million medically tailored meals for seriously ill Los Angeles-area residents.
“Chuck Lorre is not only responsible for the largest gift in Project Angel Food’s history, he is one of the most engaged philanthropists I know — and a true friend to our community,” Project Angel Food CEO Richard Ayoub said. “We’re thrilled to honor Chuck and are grateful to him, Trisha Cardoso and everyone at the Chuck Lorre Family Foundation for their extraordinary partnership, which strengthens our work, gives hope to thousands and helps build a healthier Los Angeles.”
Guests at the gala will also receive advance copies of Lorre’s autobiography, “Sitcom: A Memoir,” which is scheduled to be released Oct. 13.
Project Angel Food was founded by Williamson during the AIDS crisis in 1989 and prepares and delivers medically tailored meals to people facing critical and life-threatening illnesses in Los Angeles County. The organization said it has delivered more than 21 million meals since its founding.
