Longtime L.A. businessman laid to rest

MONCKS CORNER, South Carolina – Funeral services were held March 24 for Harry Gethers, a longtime Los Angeles businessman who ran Gethers Enterprises, an interior decorating business, for more than 40 years inside Santa Rosalia Plaza in the Crenshaw District. He was 100.

During its four decades in business, Gethers Enterprises provided furniture upholstery, window treatments and carpeting to homes and businesses throughout Southern California. The company also provided upholstery of pews and carpeting to many area churches in South Los Angeles.

Gethers also lived in the Crenshaw District with his wife, Gail, who preceded him in death. Gethers retired in the early 2000s and returned to his home state of South Carolina, where he built a successful real estate business.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army, Gethers served during World War II and the Korean War, demonstrating unwavering courage and dedication to his country, family members said. He was also a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Gethers is survived by a brother, Joseph James (Flora) Gethers; a sister, Alma G. Brown; sisters-in-law, Carrie Wright, Evelyn L. Gethers and Mattie A. Gethers, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members and friends.
