Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and 60 other Black activists — including Ralph Abernathy, Joseph Lowery, Fred Shuttlesworth and C.K. Steele — organized the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a direct action organization aimed at gaining equal rights for Black Americans.
