Glynn Turman, who rose to fame in the 1980s with films “Cooley High,” “The River Niger” and “J.D.’s Revenge,” will be honored for his motion picture work on July 10, at 11:30 a.m. with the 2,816th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The 78-year-old actor, whose storied career has continued for decades with classics such as “Gremlins,” “Deep Cover,” “The Inkwell,” and most recently “Tyler Perry’s Straw,” as well as recurring television roles on “Queen Sugar,” and “The Wire,” will receive his star at the ceremony to be held at 7065 Hollywood Blvd.

An accomplished horseman, he started competing in rodeo about 35 years ago, and in 1999, he won the state’s Regional Team Roping Finals and placed in the top five in the National U.S. Team Roping Champion Finals in Oklahoma City.

Turman and his wife Jo-An currently own a ranch in Lake Hughes, and in 1992, they co-founded a free, nonprofit, western style summer camp program called “Camp Gid D Up” for inner-city and at-risk youth.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT: “Raised by a single mother, I grew up quickly in a world that saw me differently. She taught me to be vigilant, as the color of my skin meant I had to look out for myself because ‘not many people out there are trying to save little Black boys.’ This film explores how fear of the ‘other’ can infect our homes, families and communities. It is also a meditation on the legacy of generational trauma many Black mothers carry. Ultimately, this film proclaims the importance of Black and Indigenous sovereignty in a world that often seeks to erase them.” – R. T. THORNE on “40 Acres” with Danielle Deadwyler and Michael Greyeyes now playing in cinemas
