‘Sinners’ dominates NAACP Image Awards with 13 wins

PASADENA — The Oscar-nominated film “Sinners” dominated the 57th NAACP Image Awards, winning 13 of its 18 nominations during a ceremony Feb. 28 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
The presentation, hosted by actor-comedian Deon Cole, capped a four-day event that included non-televised virtual ceremonies Feb. 23-25.
“Sinners” wins included Outstanding Motion Picture, Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for Michael B. Jordan and Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture for Miles Caton.
Ryan Coogler received two Image Awards for Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture and Ruth Carter won the award for Outstanding Costume Design.
Both supporting actor and supporting actress winners also were from “Sinners,” best actor Delrpy Lindo and best actress Wunmi Mosaku.
The film also was honored for Outstanding Stunt Ensemble, Andy Gill; Outstanding Cinematography; Outstanding Cast Ensemble, Outstanding Original Score and Outstanding Soundtrack.Compilation album.
Jordan also was honored as the Entertainer of the Year.
Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo received the President’s Award for special achievement and distinguished public service and multiple award-winning actress and activist Viola Davis, was honored with the NAACP Chairman’s Award in recognition of “a career defined by excellence, impact, and fearless advocacy … groundbreaking performances in film and television [and] her unwavering commitment to uplifting underrepresented voices.”
“Viola Davis is a generational talent who has commanded audiences with her powerful and transcending performances,” Leon W. Russell, chair of the NAACP National Board of Directors, said in a statement. He acknowledged Davis for her “deeply impactful commitment to driving change.”
“We are honored to recognize Colman Domingo with the President’s Award for the breadth and depth of his leadership, artistry, and cultural impact,” Derrick Johnson, NAACP president and CEO, said in a statement. “Across film, television, and theater, Colman has consistently chosen work that challenges narratives, expands representation and centers humanity with dignity and grace.”
The ground-breaking hip hop trio Salt-N-Pepa and DJ Spinderella were inducted into the NAACP Hall of Fame and actor Samuel L. Jackson led a tribute to the late Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Other winners included: Angela Bassett, Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for “9-1-1” (ABC); Quinta Brunson, Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for “Abbott Elementary” (ABC); Sterling K. Brown, Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for “Paradise” (ABC); Cynthia Erivo, Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for “Wicked: For Good” (Universal Pictures); and Chris Brown featuring Bryson Tiller for Outstanding Soul/R&B Song “It Depends.”
In music, Monaleo was chosen Outstanding New Artist for “Who Did the Body?”; Cardi B was chosen Outstanding Female Artist and Kendrick Lamar was chosen Outstanding Male Artist.
The Image Awards is billed as an annual celebration of Black excellence across a wide array of categories.
