JUPITER, Florida — Golf icon Tiger Woods continues to refuse to hire a driver despite a recent DUI arrest and a history of car crashes, saying he prefers to drive himself, reports say. The golf champion says he values his privacy and believes he can still drive safely on his own.
Woods, 50, was arrested on March 27 near Jupiter Island, Florida, after his Land Rover rolled over following a collision with a pressure-cleaning truck towing a small trailer. He was charged with DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test, although a breathalyzer test later showed no alcohol.
Following the incident, Woods posted bail and was released the same day from Martin County jail. Authorities noted signs of impairment but said alcohol was not involved, aligning with Woods’ earlier claim that prescription medication contributed to his 2017 incident.
According to People magazine, a local source said Woods avoids hiring a driver because he does not want constant supervision or attention. The source added that he believes he is still fully capable behind the wheel and dislikes public scrutiny.
His day-to-day life is described as quiet and private. He spends most of his time at home with his children, playing golf, practicing, or playing video games, and keeps a low profile away from media attention and social events.
Woods has been involved in several vehicle incidents over the years. In 2021, he suffered serious injuries in a Los Angeles crash that required surgery. He was also involved in another Florida crash in 2009. In 2017, he faced a DUI-related charge after being found asleep in his car, which led to a guilty plea for reckless driving, a fine, probation, and a diversion program.
He shares two teenage children, Sam and Charlie, with his ex-wife Elin Nordegren. He is currently dating Vanessa Trump, Donald Trump Jr.’s ex-wife and sources say she has adjusted well to his family life and routine.
