For six decades, historians have analyzed Huey Newton’s politics, activism and legacy. But no one has ever told the story of the family that shaped him.
As the Black Panther Party approaches its 60th anniversary on Oct. 15, retired judge and award-winning author Lise Pearlman is revisiting one of the movement’s most influential and controversial figures from a perspective historians have largely overlooked: the family that shaped Huey P. Newton before he became an international symbol of Black power.
In her book “Huey P. Newton’s Family: Roots of a Revolutionary Suicide” (the title a nod to Newton’s autobiography, “Revolutionary Suicide,” not his manner of death), Pearlman presents the first comprehensive portrait of the Newton family, revealing the relationships and experiences that played key roles in shaping Newton’s worldview and ambition.
“What was it in his family background that propelled him to become an iconic proponent of Black empowerment and pride despite his serious flaws as a role model?” Pearlman ad. “My goal was to provide a different perspective on Huey Newton than any others to date by focusing on the unique relationships his parents and siblings had with the youngest child in the family.”
Drawing on extensive archival research and interviews with surviving relatives, Pearlman traces the family’s journey from the segregated South to Oakland during the Great Migration, explores the racial and social forces that shaped the Newton siblings, examines the birth of the Black Panther Party, and follows Newton through his celebrated rise, personal unraveling, Cuban exile and lasting legacy.
“Huey ended his life on the razor’s edge between revolutionary and reactionary suicide,” Pearlman added. “This book is my take on how that played out from the viewpoints of his close-knit family.”
“All that we are is that with which we begin plus experiences and perceptions,” said Huey Newton’s brother Melvin Newton, who wrote the book’s foreword. “This book provides a window into my brother Huey and our family that has never been shared before.”
Pearlman is an acclaimed nonfiction author, filmmaker, former trial lawyer and judge, and nationally recognized speaker on famous trials of the 20th century.
