“Matriarch,” the memoir of American businesswoman, fashion designer, art collector and activist Tina Knowles, will be released April 22.
To promote the book, Knowles will launch a nine-city book tour beginning April 30 in Washington, D.C., with former first lady Michelle Obama serving as the moderator.
The tour will hit the Wiltern Theater May 2, with actress and singer KeKe Palmer serving as the moderator that night.
“I’m so excited to take Matriarch on the road and extend the conversation beyond the pages,” Knowles said. “Storytelling has always been a part of who I am — something I learned from my mother — and now, at 71, I finally understand who I truly am.
“This journey has been about strength, motherhood, family pride, and identity, and I hope these conversations help others embrace their own stories and celebrate the power of knowing what we deserve,” she added.
Tina Knowles is the mother of iconic singer Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Solange Knowles and bonus daughter Kelly Rowland.
“Matriarch” is the story of a precocious, if unruly, girl growing up in 1950s Galveston, Texas, the youngest of seven children. As a child, Knowles was is in love with her world, with extended family on every other porch and the sounds of Motown and the lapping beach always within earshot. As the realities of race and the limitations of girlhood set in, she begins to dream of the world beyond. Her instincts and impulsive nature drove her far beyond the shores of Texas to discover the life awaiting her on the other side of childhood.
That life’s journey — through grief and tragedy, creative and romantic risks and turmoil, the nurturing of superstar offspring and of her own special gifts — is the story she shares with readers.
The book chronicles family love and heartbreak, loss and perseverance, and of the kind of creativity, audacity and will it takes to change the world.
It is described as an intimate and revealing story, and a multigenerational family saga that carries within it the story of America — and the wisdom that women pass on to each other, mothers to daughters, across generations.
