John Heilman to become WeHo mayor for ninth time

WEST HOLLYWOOD — John Heilman will become the next mayor of the city and Danny Hang will become vice mayor when the  City Council holds its annual reorganization meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 12 in the City Council Chambers, 625 N. San Vicente Blvd.

The two were selected by their City Council colleagues at the Dec. 15 City Council meeting.

City Council members serve for a term of four years and are elected at large. The City Council annually select members to serve as mayor and vice mayor with the positions rotating among council members.

A reception will immediately follow the meeting at the West Hollywood Library, adjacent to the Council Chambers. The meeting, ceremony, and reception are free and open to the public. Limited validated parking will be available at the West Hollywood Park five-story structure.

Heilman was elected to the city’s first City Council in November 1984, and was selected as the city’s second mayor in 1985. It will be his ninth stint as mayor. He served on the City Council for 36 years before being defeated in the 2020 election. He was re-elected to the City Council in November 2022.

Hang was elected to the City Council in November 2024 and is serving his first term on the council. He is a Southern California native who was born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley. He is the son of Chinese-Vietnamese refugees who fled the Vietnam War in search of hope, freedom and the American dream.

Hang graduated from Loyola Marymount University and received master’s degrees in social work and gerontology from USC. He now works in disability retirement for Los Angeles County.
