INGLEWOOD — Memorial services are scheduled for 11 a.m. March 14 at Holman United Methodist Church for June Richardson-Chavez, a tireless champion for senior citizens rights and resources, who died Feb. 28 at age 95.

Richardson-Chavez, named Senior of The Year at 2015’s Volunteer Recognition Gala, worked directly with Mayor James Butts to help vision, plan and develop the $27 million Inglewood Senior Center on Locust Street, which opened in 2018.

Butts called Richardson-Chavez the “spirit of our senior community.”

“June was the rock of the design of the senior center,” Butts said. “In cities, there are anchors of institutions — people who are the foundation of commitment and progress. June was that type of person. She will be missed.”

Richardson-Chavez also served on the Senior Advisory Council and other committees at the Inglewood Senior Center.

Before moving to Los Angeles in 1978, the Chicago native was a senior center director at two community centers operated by the Chicago Park District.

Viewing is set for 10-11 a.m. at Holman, 3320 W. Adams Blvd. in South Los Angeles. Burial is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Inglewood Park Cemetery, 720 E. Florence Ave. in Inglewood. Repast will be held from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at Briarwood Homes Clubhouse, 3500 W. Manchester in Inglewood.
