LOS ANGELES — Southern University Alumni Los Angeles Chapter will host its 75th anniversary celebration Fundraiser to benefit Southern University students at 2 p.m. March 14 via Zoom.

The Los Angeles alumni chapter has provided more than $10,000 in scholarships for the 2020-21 school year. More than 200 students have received more than $200,000 in scholarships since the chapter’s establishment.

Three-day Wellness

Summit planned

LOS ANGELES — The seventh annual SoCal Wellness Summit will return to Los Angeles for a three-day event held virtually March 16-18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Different wellness experts will host each event day. Topics throughout the virtual event will include mental health during a pandemic, healthy homes – how to de-stress, de-toxify and simplify; parenting during a pandemic and COVID-19 school re-openings, vaccines and your family’s health.

College district sets

community meeting

COMPTON – The Compton Community College District will hold a virtual community meeting at 5 p.m. March 31 via Zoom.

College Trustee Clerk Barbara Calhoun will host the meeting. Topics include an update on the district’s response to COVID-19, COVID-19 vaccination information, academic and job training programs offered at Compton College, enrollment information and a campus facility update.

Career fair to be

held March 23

LOS ANGELES – Start-Up Career Fair is hosting a free virtual event that will connect founders and job seekers from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 23.

Employment roles that will be heavily recruited are business development, customer discovery sales and marketing, technical resources for front and back end development, designers with UI/UX, wireframes, mockups and graphic design.

Eagle-Con to honor

George Takei

LOS ANGELES — Actor, activist and Eisner winner George Takei will be the headline honoree at the Eagle-Con virtual sci-fi and fantasy conference hosted by Cal State Los Angeles and the Art Directors Guild March 11-13.

Takei, along with production designer Wynn Thomas and best-selling author Nnedi Okorafor, are this year’s awardees. The Eagle-Con theme will be “Possibilities Imagined Here.”

The theme celebrates diversity and addresses accessibility, underrepresentation and pushing boundaries in science fiction and fantasy genres.

Children’s Bureau

to host orientation

CARSON — Children’s Bureau will host a virtual orientation for parents who want to learn about becoming a foster or fost-adopt parent from 4 to 5 p.m. March 18.

Children’s Bureau welcomes people, regardless of race, age, religion, disability, marital status, ethnic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression, to become a resource for children. Qualifying families receive training and support throughout their journey to becoming a foster parent.

University offers

digital exhibitions

CARSON — Cal State Dominguez Hills has opened two digital exhibitions focused on the Black Power Movement through the lens of influential Black organizations and systemic racism in the pre-World War II housing industry.

The articles and documents chosen for the exhibition are from the Holt Labor Library Periodical Collection, which was donated to the Gerth Archives in 2019.
