Yoli, a spirited Afro-Latina girl from Costa Rica, is embarking on a new life in the United States. As she faces the hurdles of adapting to a different culture, Yoli learns valuable lessons about self-acceptance, cultural pride and the beauty of her unique identity.
So goes, “The Adventures of La Tica Morenita: Journey to the New World,” by Y.B. Blake León.
“My book was inspired by my own experiences as an immigrant and my desire to share the stories of Afro-Latino communities, highlighting the struggles and triumphs of embracing a new culture while staying true to one’s roots,” said the author, who is a Costa Rican native.
“The Adventures of La Tica Morenita” is intended for children of all ages, especially those from Afro-Latino backgrounds. It also will pique the interest of families, educators and immigrants, and anyone interested in diverse cultural stories.
“I hope readers will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Afro-Latino experience in Hispanic countries and that children who see themselves in Yoli will feel empowered and proud of their unique identities,” Blake León said. “My favorite part of the book is when Yoli starts to feel more confident in her new environment, embracing her natural curly hair and making new friends. It’s a turning point that symbolizes her growth and acceptance.”
