“Pinky Promises: A Young Woman’s Reflective Journal,” by Kellyn Miller, is a heartfelt book filled with personal reflections that the author wishes she had known growing up.

“My book offers words of wisdom as well as stories of trials and triumphs,” said the author. “I’m basically kind of talking to my younger self about different topics, things and situations that I wish I had known, or things I wish someone would have told me when I was younger.”

This is Miller’s first book and the inspiration came as a coming-of-age gift to her daughter. Miller addresses topics such as losing a parent, self-esteem, comparisons among siblings, boys, relationships with mothers and more.

“I wanted to be the person I needed when I was a younger,” Miller said. “As a teacher, I saw myself in so many girls, specifically the Black girls, and I wanted to tell them everything I wish I had known.”

“Pinky Promises” was created out of importance and it served as a part of a healing process for the author. “I included a workbook so that readers could fully come on the journey and also do the work within themselves,” Miller said. “The workbook was developed to inspire a sisterhood of young women who have the courage to stand in their truth, while aspiring to be something greater.”

The workbook component of the journal allows readers to write letters to themselves and others, and to jot down notes, affirmations and more.

“Pinky Promises” will prove to be inspiring to many women.

“My intended audience is women of all ages,” Miller said. “Mothers who want to encourage their daughters or who need a little encouragement themselves.”

Miller hopes readers of her book understand that they are not alone.

“We all have stories, triumphs, traumas,” she said. “I hope readers gain a sense of self-empowerment. I hope they are encouraged to stand in their truths and to walk in their light.”

In addition to being an author, Miller is a middle-school teacher and mentor. She lives in Los Angeles. To connect with the author, visit her Instagram @kiekomiller.
