Contributing Writer

“The Best of the Worst,” by Emily Silver Owen, is a compelling narrative chronicling the author’s journey to recovery after she and her dog were hit by a drunk driver in 2019 — a crash that took the dog’s life and left Owen with a permanent brain injury.

Owen spent weeks in a minimally conscious, unresponsive state, months in medical facilities and two years in neurological rehab, navigating an emotional and mental rollercoaster.

March is recognized as Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month, a time dedicated to highlighting the experiences of survivors and advocating for better understanding and support. Owen’s story serves as a testament to resilience, shedding light on the long-term challenges faced by those living with brain injuries.

“I had a story inside of me that had to be told; I needed to process what had happened, and I’ve always loved to write,” Owen said. “Once it became a book, I realized it could help people and was not just for me.

Along with her story, the author shares resources, strategies and treatments that played a crucial role in her healing. Owen’s favorite parts of her book are the haiku included at the beginning and end of each chapter.

“The selection of haikus are ones I wrote after I was hurt as another outlet for me to process my thoughts and emotions,” said the author.

The book is intended for anyone who has suffered, anyone facing an overwhelming situation, especially other brain injury survivors and their loved ones.

“I hope this book will bring people hope that they can overcome their challenges with hard work and a positive attitude,” Owen said. “My message to them is to never give up, and to advocate for themselves.”

In addition to being an author, Owen is an after-school supervisor. She is based in Studio City.

She is currently working on a children’s book that explores challenges neuro divergent children may face, furthering her mission to foster awareness and understanding. For more information about the author and her work, visit emwritesbooks.com.

Owen will host a book signing from 1 to 3 p.m. March 15, at The Open Book, 2880-A Cochran St., Simi Valley.
