Jamaican immigrant John Brown Russwurm and New York abolitionist Samuel Cornish launch “Freedom’s Journal,” America’s first Black newspaper. “Too long have others spoken for us,” the two editors say in their inaugural editorial. “We wish to plead our own cause.”
