BOOK CORNER: Plight of women captured in author’s latest poetry book

By Marissa Wells

Contributing Writer

“Blue on a Blue Palette,” by Lynne Thompson, is a beautiful work of poetry that reveals the plight of women, their struggles historically and in the present, exploring the everyday triumphs and challenges that women endure.

Thompson is the author of three other collections of poetry. Her latest work was inspired by poems she’s accumulated over the years.

“I wasn’t aware that I was writing so many poems about the daily circumstances in which women find themselves until I sat down and looked at what I’d written over the past decade and realized this was a constant theme in my work,” Thompson said. “During these particularly fraught political and cultural times, I thought it was important to give voice to our stories.”

“Blue on a Blue Palette” consists of about 100 pages of poems that discuss the resilience of women by highlighting their capacity for joy and survival despite issues of race, culture, the pandemic, and climate change impacting their livelihoods.

The author uses a variety of literary forms to explore themes of sexuality, spirituality, resilience and intelligence. It was important for Thompson to create a book that amplified women’s voices and captures the complexity of women’s experiences.

“Sad to say, but silencing women’s voices has been the goal of our patriarchal society for far too long,” said the author. “If we’re given a chance to speak up — in literary or any other space — we must do so.”

“Blue on a Blue Palette” will resonate with adult women and men of all backgrounds.

“I hope that reading these poems will lead the reader to feeling a sense of empathy, compassion and recognition of the plight of women historically,” Thompson said.

In addition to being an author, Thompson is an attorney and is a member of several boards. She is based in Los Angeles and was the fourth poet kaureate of the city. For more information about the author and her work, visit lynnethompson.us.

Thompson will host a reading at the second annual Música y Poemas from 1 to 6 p.m. Nov. 9 on North Figueroa Street between Avenues 55 and 57 in Highland Park.
