“Unearthed: The Lies We Carry & The Truths They Bury,” by Chanchal Garg, is a memoir that chronicles the author’s life through short stories as she confronts the spiritual and sexual abuse that upended her life.
Raised to obey without question, a transformative moment during pregnancy set her on a path to reclaim her voice, identity and belonging on her own terms.
“I watched the lineage stay silent about very oppressive and very harmful things,” Garg said. “So, one of the reasons I wrote the book was for my kids, wanted them to have a model of what it was like to actually speak up and not be silent.”
“Unearthed” unfolds in three parts: the conditions that made the author vulnerable to spiritual and sexual abuse, the abuse she endured, and the healing that followed.
It was important for Garg to write a book that addresses the harsh realities faced by many, especially women.
“I didn’t want my trauma to be for nothing and I have watched women in my maternal lineage stay silent and cause future generations continued suffering,” Garg said. “I didn’t want that. I’m hoping to break these cycles in my own family and inspire others to look at their own lives and families to see what needs to evolve.”
“Unearthed” is intended for adult women, daughters of immigrants and anyone navigating intersecting identities.
“I hope my story will inspire readers to reflect on the narratives they hold that no longer serve them; I hope they ask if these narratives are truly their own or inherited,” Garg said. “I hope it inspires courage to choose what to keep and what to evolve.”
In addition to being an author, Garg is a speaker, executive coach and facilitator at the Stanford Graduate Business School. She is based in Folsom, California.
Garg will host a book signing and reading June 27 at 7 p.m. at Books Inc, 2251 Chestnut Street, San Francisco.
