HAWTHORNE — The city of Hawthorne will host a free virtual business expo to help South Bay small businesses get information needed to thrive during COVID-19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 27.
The virtual event will feature a keynote presentation by tech entrepreneur Tim Berry, who will review the key elements of business planning and how to use these concepts during tough economic times.
The business expo will feature two discussion panels. Panel one will be Community and Government Resources Assisting Businesses Survive COVID-19.
The second panel will be on How My Business Reinvented Itself After COVID-19. Some business owners will explain how they adjusted their business plans to meet the challenge of the COVID-19 environment.

Bass honored
by YouthBuild
LOS ANGELES — U.S. Rep. Karen Bass has been named a YouthBuild champion for helping to magnify the voices of YouthBuild students and alumni in Congress.
YouthBuild champions are congressional leaders who advocate for funding and policies that benefit opportunity youth and their communities.
“YouthBuild provides hundreds of young people in South Los Angeles and thousands throughout the country, with the skills needed to be successful in our communities, with the mission of creating a more equitable society,” Bass said. “You cannot help young folks thrive by forcing them into a mold. You need to invest in them and help them grow so that they can reach their full potential. That’s what YouthBuild does. I’m so proud to join this effort.”

Inglewood cemetery
holds photo contest
INGLEWOOD — Six local photographers won honors in a contest sponsored by Inglewood Park Cemetery.
In the Pure Photography category, the first-place winner was Courtney Gladney with her entry, “Cross Her Heart.” Winning first place in the “Creative Eye” category was Jarl Ondine, with the entry “Blue Angel.” Both won $500 cash prizes.
The second place winner in the Pure Photography category was Stephanie Vahedi with her entry “Resurrection.”
Joseph Francis with his “From On High” entry finished second in the Creative Eye category. Each won $250.
Third place winners were Anna Smith for “Forever Your Guardian Angel” in the Pure Photography category and Helaine Cummins for “Pray for Humanity” in the Creative Eye category. They both received $100.
The photo contest was open to amateurs, photography enthusiasts and professionals over 18. The six winning photographs and other entries will be shown online at www.IPC-PhotoContest.com through the end of February.
Forum becomes
vaccination site
INGLEWOOD — The Forum is Inglewood has been added as a Los Angeles County COVID-19 vaccine distribution site.
It will be able to vaccinate nearly 4,000 people per day at each location.
“Getting the vaccine to every resident is our top priority in the fight to end this pandemic,” county Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell said.
Only priority groups identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with the additional assistance provided by the state, are receiving the vaccine. Frontline health care workers also are eligible for vaccination.
“Los Angeles County is setting up these sites throughout the county to vaccinate our most vulnerable and at-risk residents to protect them from this deadly virus,” Supervisor Hilda Solis said.
Fire damages
bank building
LEIMERT PARK — A firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries Jan. 20 at a blaze in a commercial building that houses a Chase Bank branch.
Crews responded about 12:25 a.m. to 4401 Crenshaw Blvd., near Vernon Avenue, and found fire burning through the roof of the two-story building, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Firefighters switched to a defensive mode due to heavy fire on both floors and difficulty accessing the seat of the fire, Stewart said.
The injured firefighter was taken to a hospital, Stewart said.
The fire was declared a greater alarm blaze with 90 firefighters assigned, she said.
